Animal welfare organizations make a significant impact in Michigan, promoting compassion and safety for animals through rescue centers, veterinary clinics, food pantries, and other unique initiatives.

The Michigan Humane Society, 3rd Coast Labrador Retriever Rescue, GreyHeart Greyhound Adoption, Ferndale Cat Shelter and Catfe Lounge, Animal Welfare Society of Southeastern Michigan, and GreyHounds of Eastern Michigan all provide one-of-a-kind opportunities to participate, with a variety of adoption, foster, fundraising, volunteering and donation options available.

The Michigan Humane Society is a nonprofit that runs adoption centers in Westland, Detroit, and Sterling Heights, as well as veterinary centers in Westland, Detroit, Rochester Hills, and Howell. 3rd Coast Labrador Retriever Rescue is a fully volunteer-based rescue that specializes in rehoming Labradors and Labrador-mixed breeds in Michigan, and they accept donations and look for more fosters. They have donation options and many volunteer opportunities available.

Canton Public Library is incredibly proud to share the amazing work being done by several animal welfare organizations in Michigan, most notably the Ferndale Cat Shelter and their Catfe Lounge nonprofit cat café. The Michigan Humane Society, 3rd Coast Labrador Retriever Rescue, GreyHeart Greyhound Adoption, and Animal Welfare Society of Southeastern Michigan are all making a significant difference for animals in need and bring unique opportunities for adoption, fostering, fundraising, volunteering, and donations. With these incredible groups dedicating their time and efforts, Michigan is demonstrating its commitment to providing compassionate care and safety for animals.

GreytHounds of Eastern Michigan (GEM) is an exemplary organization that brings joy and hope to retired racing greyhounds. GEM provides a loving, safe environment for these animals through their foster-based adoption program, where they teach the dogs what it means to be part of a family. In addition, their Greyhound Inmate Experience (TGIE) initiative allows inmates to socialize, train, and care for greyhounds in a prison environment. GEM offers many opportunities for adoption, volunteering, and donations, including those through Kroger Community Rewards.

The Humane Society of Huron Valley is a proud nonprofit based in Ann Arbor that provides care for a wide variety of animals, from cats and dogs to rabbits and horses. They offer a vet clinic and even a cat café. Last Day Dog Rescue, operating out of Livonia with foster homes across Michigan, is another no-kill rescue that believes all life is precious. They have adoptable cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies, as well as many volunteer opportunities such as dog walking, animal transportation, administrative roles, social media, photography, and event help. Plus, they participate in Kroger Community Rewards, Goodsearch, and iGive.

Midwest Rabbit Rescue is another no-kill rescue that specializes in rehoming rabbits, operated entirely by volunteers. Donations are accepted and there are plenty of volunteer opportunities available such as rabbit feeding, habitat cleaning, and grooming. They also participate in Kroger Community Rewards and are a proud member of the Humane Society family.

Many animal welfare organizations in Michigan are making significant contributions to filling the needs of vulnerable pets and creating a more nurturing environment for animals. From rescuing Labradors and rehoming cats to providing food pantries and fostering greyhounds, these admirable groups take action to promote compassion and improve the lives of animals into their own hands. Despite the limited resources available, each of these organizations demonstrates a commitment to upholding the rights of animals while putting their best paw forward and showing that their efforts can make a real difference in animals’ lives.
