Echo: A Valuable Addition to the Plymouth-Canton School District

The Plymouth-Canton school district is excited to announce the addition of Echo, a 3-year-old Labrador, to their team. With her impressive dual roles, Echo is training to provide comfort to students as a therapy dog and detect firearms to keep the community safe. It’s no surprise that Echo is such an asset to the school district – her invaluable service is sure to make a difference in the lives of the students.

Echo’s Dual Role

Echo is being trained to have a dual role in the Plymouth-Canton Community School District: providing comfort to students as a therapy dog and detecting ammunition, firearms, and explosives. With his smiling face always bringing a smile to the kids’ faces, Echo is a beloved member of the school district. His partner, Scott Hughesdon, describes him as “his eyes and ears of protection” who is ready to serve in any way he can.

Echo is a proud addition to the 18-person school district security team, providing a proactive measure towards improved safety in the district in light of the 2021 six-hour lockdown spurred by reports of a gun on campus. Josh Meier, Director of School Safety and Security for the district, emphasizes the importance of being proactive and preventative. He stresses that safety should be improved without making schools feel like prisons. The district is looking into bringing in more dogs to serve similar roles as Echo, reinforcing their commitment to a positive and secure learning environment.
